Abstract

977,001. Controlling burners. HONEYWELL CONTROLS Ltd. Nov. 28, 1963 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 1278/63. Heading F4T. [Also in Division G1] An ultra-violet flame detection apparatus for a burner supplied with liquid and pulverized fuel comprises a first element 10a posi - tioned to respond to the flame G of the liquid fuel and a second element 10b positioned to respond to the flame H2 of the pulverized fuel. The elements 10a, 10b may be Geiger-Mueller tubes of the non-self-quenching type. The first element 10a is positioned behind the burner structure and receives radiation passing along an annular space E between a tube A for liquid fuel and an annular structure B for pulverized fuel. A zone H1 of unburnt pulverized fuel shields the first element 10a from the flame H2 of the pulverized fuel. The element 10b is positioned at one side of the burner structure. The Geiger-Mueller tubes are connected into an electrical circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), including four lamps and two changeover switches, each tube operating one switch so that the lamps indicate the four possible flame conditions of the burner. When a burner installation includes an array of burners a small apertured plate. is provided between the second element 10b and the burner with which it is associated. The indications from the elements may be used to operate control action such as the opening or closing of a fuel valve or the starting or stopping of a pump or fan motor. The control means may be a computer for controlling a steam generating plant. The liquid fuel burner may be a pressure jet burner or a burner of the whirl chamber type. The pulverized fuel is fed tangentially to the annular structure B. A wind-box F supplies air under pressure and is provided with vanes causing the air to rotate. Specifications 861,717, 884,395, 890,854 and 913,551 are referred to.
