Abstract

976,582. Helicopter undercarriages. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Oct. 9, 1963 [July 25, 1962], No. 28562/62. Heading B7G. A helicopter undercarriage has four wheels arranged in diamond formation, two diagonally opposed wheels 15, 16 being on the fore and aft axis and fully castoring, and the other two 11, 12, which are the primary load-carrying wheels, being on a common transverse axis. As shown, the axis of the wheels 11, 12 passes directly under the centre of gravity CG. The wheels 15, 16 are steerable, their common turning centre lying under the centre of gravity, and are connected to each other and to a control wheel 16 by a chain 25. The front wheel may be connected to a towbar (Fig. 3, not shown) for ground manoeuvring, the steering control being disconnected. Alternatively, only one of the wheels 15, 16 is steerable, the other castoring freely.
