Abstract

976,343. Spark arresters. ROCKWELLSTANDABD CORPORATION. Feb. 10, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 5000/61. Heading F4J. [Also in Divisions B2 and F1] A spark arrester for the exhaust systems of internal combustion engines comprises two coaxial cylindrical shells 10 and 11 forming an annular chamber 12 into which particles suspended in the exhaust stream are deflected by the cyclone action of a vane assembly 30 and recirculate through apertures 40 into the gaseous stream. The gaseous stream enters the arrester through a duct 26 and leaves to atmosphere through a duct 17 which projects into the inner shell, separated particles passing through ports 37 and past vanes 36 into the chamber 12. Continued recirculation causes abrasion of the particles until they are of such size that they follow the main gas stream to atmosphere. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ports 37 are omitted from the shell 11 and particles pass over the top of this shell to reach the chamber 12.
