In apparatus for indicating the position of a tool relative to a workpiece, comprising a scale and a pointer, inaccuracies due to a temperature difference between the scale and the pointer mountings are eliminated by comparing their temperatures using temperature-sensitive resistors in A.C. bridges, and making the temperature of the pointer mounting follow that of the scale mounting. As shown (Fig. 1) a machine tool comprises a table 2 carrying a scale 3, and a tool carrier 6 carrying an indexing element 4 whose temperatures are determined by thermistors 9, 8 respectively, and the ambient temperature by resistors 13, 14. The resistors are connected into bridges with fixed resistors R1-R4 (Fig. 2), the unbalance current operating a polarised relay 27 which closes a circuit for a heater 11 or a fan 12, to make the temperature of the scale 3 equal that of the marker 4. In an alternative arrangement the unbalance currents of the two bridges are compared in a ratio-meter type instrument.
