In a change-speed control for motor vehicles, wherein a three or, as described, four forward speed and reverse synchro-mesh main changespeed gear is arranged in series with an auxiliary change-speed gear such as the two-speed direct overdrive gear described, and a shaft 14, manually actuated by a steering column or main gear-box mounted control, is partrotated for cross-shift selection and then axially moved to establish a selected ratio in the main gear, subsequent, further part-rotation of the shaft 14, when the main gear is in top, or in one of the top two gears, also actuates, without change in the main gear, an electric push-button switch 32 whereby a selected ratio, e.g. overdrive, is engaged in the auxiliary gear. The shaft 14 comprises an arm 12 for engagement in notches of the shift rods. A safety member 16, rotatable, but not movable axially, with the shaft 14 and preventing simultaneous operation of two shift rods, comprises arms through holes in which the shaft 14 passes, a cross-bar 16b having longitudinal slots 18 receiving the arm 12, and further arms 16a embracing the arm 12 when the latter is in neutral position, and is axially located by an end wall and a flange of the main gear-box. The switch 32 is mounted in the gear-box wall and is actuated by a projection 34 on the safety member 16. An adjustable, spring-loaded ball detent 26 mounted in the end wall is respectively engageable in recesses 27, 28 of a plate 24 of the safety member 16 in the rotational shaft 14 position for main gear cross-shift selection for third and fourth gears and in the rotational shaft 14 position for overdrive engagement. A gear-box abutment 35 engageable by a safety member arm 16a, limits rotation of the arm 12. A further gearbox abutment 36 at the neutral axial position of the arm 12 co-operates with a peg 38 thereon to prevent axial movement of the arm only when it is in the further part-rotational position for overdrive engagement, thereby necessitating the disengagement of overdrive before a change between, or from, third and fourth gear can be made.
