Abstract
1461328 Change speed control FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 29 March 1974 [17 April 1973] 13943/74 Heading F2D In a motor vehicle countershaft gear wherein four forward ratios and one reverse are selected by a shift lever movable in a three channel gate to operate a single slide-turn selector rod 2, the gear input shaft is decelerated to facilitate meshing of the reverse sliding wheel at standstill, by engagement of a pin 11 on the selector rod 2 with one inclined side of a notch 12 in the 3-4 shift fork 4 which, when the selector rod 2 is turned to preselect the reverse channel, is thereby shifted axially against disc springs 8 by a limited amount sufficient to engage the friction synchronizing ring of the fourth ratio, the ring being subsequently released by axial retraction of the pin 11 when reverse is established. For this purpose the 3-4 shift fork 4 has limited axial freedom with respect to an arm 6 through which it is moved axially by the usual selector finger 3 on the rod 2 and is prevented from rotation by a projection 10 engaging the arm. During preselection of the reverse channel the arm 6 is locked by the usual interlock and the shift fork 4 is moved axially to the synchronizing position against the disc springs 8. When the selector shaft 2 is turned to preselect the 1-2 channel the pin 11 aligns with a deeper axial portion of the notch 12, which it enters for second and moves away from for first, which ratios are thus unaffected. In the 3-4 channel the pin 11 is turned into engagement with a flat part of the notch 12 opposite the inclined part, thereby locking the 3-4 shift fork 4 to the selector rod 2 for normal 3-4 selection.
