Abstract

1,110,388. Change speed control. WISSENSCHAFTLICH - TECHNISCHES ZENTRUM AUTOMOBILBAU VEB. 7 Feb., 1966, No. 5309/66. Heading F2D. In a gear shift mechanism for a motor vehicle wherein shift forks 10, 11, 10<SP>1</SP> have annular and axial grooves (17), (18), (19), (20), (21) which selectively co-operate with axially fixed locking balls 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> and diametrically opposed pairs of dogs 3, (3<SP>1</SP>), 4, (4<SP>1</SP>), 5, (5<SP>1</SP>) integral with an axially slidable and rotatable selector tube 2 so that only one shift fork may be moved axially at a time whilst the other shift forks are locked against axial movement, the annular and axial grooves (17) ... (21) are formed in sleeves 15, 16, 15<SP>1</SP> secured to the shift forks thereby permitting identical shift forks to be used for all ratios. When the shift forks 10, 11, 10<SP>1</SP> are in their neutral positions, as shown, the locking balls 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> and the dogs 3 ... (5<SP>1</SP>) lie in the annular grooves (17) and rotation of the tube 2 to select a gear ratio, positions one of the locking balls, e.g. 7<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 3, not shown) in alignment with the axial groove (21) in the associated shift fork 11 and positions the dogs 4, (4<SP>1</SP>) between the grooves (19), (20). The other locking balls 7, 7<SP>11</SP> are out of alignment with their grooves (21) whilst the dogs 3, (3<SP>1</SP>), 5 (5<SP>1</SP>) are aligned with grooves (18), (18<SP>1</SP>) so that subsequent axial movement of the tube 2 moves the shift fork 11 axially whilst the balls 7, 711 prevent axial movement of the shift forks 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. Slots 12, 13, 14 permit axial movement of the tube 2 relative to the balls 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> which are held against axial movement by engaging annular grooves in a shaft 6. The tube 2 is positioned axially by a spring-pressed detent ball 23 engaging annular grooves 28, 29, 30 in the tube 2. A spring-pressed plunger (31) (Fig. 5, not shown), engages cam surfaces (25), (26), (27) on a bracket 24 fast with the tube 2 when the latter is in its gear ratio positions.
