Abstract

Solid crystalline polyethylene is produced by contacting ethylene in an inert hydrocarbon diluent at 50-180 DEG C. with a catalyst of 0.1-5 moles AlCl3 and 0.5-10 atoms Al/mole of TiCl4, TiBr4 or VCl4. The catalyst is prepared by grinding or milling aluminium powder, e.g. at 0-175 DEG C. for 1-15 days, with at least a portion of the AlCl3 and then mixing the mixture with the transition metal halide and the residual AlCl3. The polymerisation may be carried out, e.g. continuously at 25-700 p.s.i.g. using 0.05-2% of catalyst. The catalyst may be activated with HCl, HBr, HI, water, alcohols or organic acids.
