Abstract

Olefines or vinyl butyl ether are polymerized by treatment with at least one compound of a transition metal of the Periodic System or alkyls of metals of the third group of the Periodic System which have been irradiated with 107 to 4 X 108 R. per gram. The irradiation may be performed before addition to or in the presence of the monomer. Exemplified metal compounds:-titanium oxide, aluminium triethyl, chromium trioxide, aluminium silicate, and titanium tetrachloride. Exemplified olefines are:-ethylene, propylene and styrene.ALSO:Olefines or vinyl butyl ether are polymerized by treatment with at least one compound of a transition metal of the Periodic system or alkyls of metals of the third group of the Periodic system which have been irradiated with 107 to 4 X 108 R. per gram. The irradiation may be performed before addition to or in the presence of the monomer. Exemplified metal compounds: titanium oxide, aluminium triethyl, chromium trioxide, aluminium silicate, and titanium tetrachloride. Exemplified monomers are: ethylene, propylene and styrene. The polymerization may be carried out in a solvent such as hexane, heptane or cycloheptane and in the examples ethylene is added both continuously and in batches to the polymerization vessel.
