Abstract
A modified TiCl3, suitable for use as a catalyst component, is made by agitating TiCl3 at a temperature between 20 DEG and 90 DEG C. for a period of 10 minutes to 30 hours.ALSO:A stereospecific polymerization catalyst for alpha-olefins is made by contacting a solid transition metal halide e.g. TiCl3, with an organometallic compound e.g. AlEt2Cl, and either heating the mixture of the organometallic compound and halide, or the halide to a temperature between 20 DEG and 90 DEG C. under agitation for a period of 10 minutes to 30 hours. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent such as n-heptane, and the polymer is recovered by conventional techniques e.g. addition of butyl alcohol, and steam treatment. The exemplified alpha-olefin is propylene.
