In an apparatus for feeding batches of articles transversely from the end of a close pack 11 by means of a pusher 28, belts 12 continuously urge the pack 11 towards a transfer station against a stop 13 which reciprocates in the lengthwise direction of the pack, thereby selecting a length of pack at the transfer station. Means 14, 26 are provided for restraining forward movement of the pack during transfer, by clamping the pack against guide rail 16, and a selecting feeler 31 is placed to engage the forward side of the pack to detect any portion of an article extending towards the pack beyond the selected batch length and to move rearwardly of the pack to clear that article for transfer. Batches of biscuits are transferred to feed channel 27 by a succession of pushers 28 carried on an endless chain 29. The pushers are mounted on carrier arms so as to be movable in the lengthwise direction of the pack; such movement is made in response to a secondary feeler 33 whose tip extends slightly beyond the normal position of the rearmost tip of the pusher 28, so that if an exact number of biscuits forms the selected length, the pusher is withdrawn slightly to avoid scraping the foremost biscuit of the pack.
