Abstract
974,485. Pressure suits; helmets. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Jan. 14, 1963 [Oct. 20, 1961], No. 37669/61. Heading A3V. A lightweight pressure suit headpiece of flexible, gas tight material comprises two hinged jaws which open and close like a purse so as to be entirely clear of or to enclose the head, one part of the headpiece comprising a flexible transparent fluid pressure tight visor which rests clear of the face when the headpiece is open and is located in front of the face and eyes when the headpiece is closed. The headpiece 10 made of flexible gas tight cloth with a transparent flexible window 11 and has a pair of U-shaped frames 13a, 13b hingeing about an axis 14. The contracting surfaces 14a, 14b of the frames have sealing members 15a, 15b to provide a gas tight joint. The wearer may be equipped with an oxygen mask 17 and fitting helmet 15, fitted with the usual intercommunication accessories. A signal indicating that inflation of the suit is necessary sets into operation first the means for raising the frames from the neck to the sides of the head and then the means for rotating the frames about the axis 14 to the closed position, when pressurization is not required the catch 16 may be released and the headpiece opened and lowered manually.
