Abstract

926,500. Respiratory appliances. B. F. GOODRICH CO. Feb. 1, 1962, No. 3905/62. Class 81 (2). A high-altitude flying helmet comprises an internal, apertured, flexible diaphragm 20, Fig. 1, which is sealed against the face and divides the helmet into two chambers, one of which 22 is supplied with oxygen through a demand valve 19 while the other is in communication with the interior of the suit 11 and can be pressurized as necessary. Gas from the regulator 19 passes through a tube 18 to a tube surrounding the face opening and having a series of orifices by means of which the gas is directed towards the transparent window 22. The flexible diaphragm 20, Fig. 3, is of impervious material and is attached to the helmet 10 around its outer edge while its inner edge is flexibly secured to a metal frame member 24. Attached to this is a sealing member comprising an air-impervious cushioning member 29, faced with an air permeable sponge layer 28, together with an impermeable sheet 26 attached to the front margin of the layer 28 and to the rear of the member 29. The enclosed space 30 is inflated with air received through a tube 35 and this causes the pad 28 to be pressed against the head and form an air-tight seal. At the same time, air from the space 30 percolates through the cushioning layer 28 and removes any perspiration which might accumulate from the prolonged contact with the skin. In a modified form of helmet the transparent portion is made as a pivoted visor which, when in the closed position, is also sealed by an inflatable, circular cushion.
