Abstract

1,144,317. Helmets. M.L. AVIATION CO. Ltd. 7 Sept., 1966 [9 Sept., 1965], No. 38553/65. Heading A3V. A pressurizable helmet in a partial pressure suit includes an inflatable neck sealing tube 19 divided at the front to enable the helmet to be put on and communicating through a pipe 20 with an annular inflatable tube 22 secured to resilient pads 25 fixed to the helmet shell 1 and encompassing an unpressurized zone 12 above the head with a vent 13 to atmosphere. The zone 12 is substantially equal in area to the cross-sectional area of the neck enclosed by the tube 19. The interior 8 of the helmet is pressurized by oxygen via a valve in a breathing mask 4, resiliently secured at 6 to a pivoted front part 5 of the helmet which can be swung outwardly to enable the helmet to be put on. The pressure in tubes 19 and 20 is higher than that in the interior 8. The edge of a visor 3 has an inflatable seal 23 communicating with the tube 22 via a pipe 26. The inflatable tubes 19, 22 and 23 may be replaced by foam padding members with impermeable skins and, optionally, flexible sealing flanges such as (101) in Fig. 2 (not shown). In a full pressure suit the helmet is attached to the body of the suit by a pressure tight lock 17 carried on a rotatable neck race and the neck sealing tube is omitted. In all forms of helmet the annular sealing member may be faced with artificial hair or chamois for improved sealing against the wearer's hair.
