Abstract

974,270. Connecting-rods; pistons. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Sept. 2, 1963, No. 34579/63. Heading F2T. A piston 10 has a central boss 1<SP>6</SP> depending from its head and is connected to its connecting-rod 11 by a T-shaped gudgeon pin 13 secured by a retaining pin 15. The boss has a bore 17 for the gudgeon pin and a reduced portion which, with the stem portion of the gudgeon pin, is received in the bifurcated end of the rod 11. Shoulders on the gudgeon pin abut the flat ends 14 of the rod and the pin 15 engages aligned holes in the gudgeon pin and the rod and is secured by a pin 19, which engages a slot 21 in the rod, and a splitring 20. In a modification, Fig. 4, the piston boss has a bifurcated end and the gudgeon pin 13a engages a bore 23 in a strap portion 22 of the connecting rod 11a and is secured to the piston boss by the pin 15a.
