Abstract

1445587 Pistons; connecting rods J S NEEL 3 Oct 1973 46220/73 Heading F2T In a piston and connecting rod assembly the small end 16 of the connecting rod 12 is inserted by a lateral movement into a transverse bore 30 in a diametric web 28 depending from the piston head 24, the opening 32 in the web for the shank 18 of the rod being dimensioned to permit the necessary angular movement of the rod in operation. The bore 30 may have a coating 31 of bearing material and the small end has a bore 20 closed by end plates 56. Slot 32 has an entrance slot 38 having a width slightly greater than that of the shank 18. The web 28 may be formed with lightening holes 44, 46, Fig. 3, and may be integral with the head, as shown, or connected thereto, e.g. by rivets. The piston-rod has a longitudinal duct 52 therein through which oil can be supplied to the bore 20 and then through a radial bore 54 in the end 16 to lubricate the latter. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the piston skirt 22 below the bore 30 and on opposite sides of the web 28 is eliminated and the web may be terminated at or adjacent the side of the bore 30 remote from the piston head.
