Abstract
974,198. Cooling milk in bulk; film coolers. C. J. CREED. May 27, 1963, No. 21046/63. Heading F4S. Milk to be cooled is supplied to the lower end of a vessel 1 through a conduit 3, and cooled milk is discharged from the upper end of the vessel through a conduit 4, the vessel being constructed at its upper end to receive and support a cooler comprising a cover member 5, and a depending water tube type heat exchanger 6 extending into the vessel. Cooling water is supplied to the cover 5 via a connection 7, and after circulating through the heat exchanger, issues from the cover through outlets around its periphery and flows down over the outside of the vessel. Cooling water may also be supplied to a perforate ring 8 around the upper end of the inlet pipe 2 from which it flows down the outside of the pipe. The outlet pipe 4 may be fitted with a ring 9 to prevent seepage of water along the pipe 4 and consequent contamination of milk by the cooling water. The vessel may be supported by means of trunnions 10, on a frame 11, so that the vessel can be tilted to empty it through the outlet pipe; being kept in position during use by cross-bars 12 and 13.
