Abstract

974,178. Fluid heaters; headers and tube supports. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. June 25, 1962 [June 26, 1961], No. 24332/62. Headings F4A and F4S. In an industrial furnace, e.g. as used in petrol processing for heating fluids in heating tubes 12, the tubes are arranged in rows and issue into headers 25 situated outside the heating space 14 of the furnace, the tube ends together with the headers 25 being secured in hollow closed elements 23 which are entirely separate from the roof 21 of the heating space 14 and are spaced from the heating space by means of a plurality of gas-tight ducts 24 such that around the elements there is a cooling channel 27 which is in communication with the atmosphere. As shown, the tubes are suspended at their tops from the hollow element 23 by means of annular collars 26 welded near the ends of the tubes, the collars resting on the upper edges of the ducts 24 and thus sealing the heating space 14 from the hollow interior 29. The ducts 24 are each constituted by a pipe length which is rigidly attached to the hollow element 23 and the roof 21 of the furnace. The tube ends pass through the ducts 24 with a clearance. The lower tube ends and headers are housed in elements 10, 11 situated below the fuel and combustion air supply lines of a combustion device (not shown). The hollow elements 23 may be connected to a source of compressed air.
