[Also in Division H1] A strain gauge resistor comprises a quantity of willow-wood charcoal which has been kept at red or white heat for several hours in a non- oxidising atmosphere, and then crushed. The carbon element so formed is supplied with metal strip or braid electrodes and enclosed in a flexible, hermetically sealed capsule of thin metal, or paper or resin-bonded glass fibre. The strain gauge is used to measure the tension in a rod 10 (Fig. 1) by locating the resistor 1 between two bowed strips 2, 3 clamped to the rod. Tension in a cable 14<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 5) is measured by locating the resistor 1 between a strip 2 and a rod 13<SP>1</SP> clamped to the cable at one end 16 but free to slide at the other end 17. The resistor 1 is compressed by the cable 141 via a saddle 18 attached to the rod 13<SP>1</SP>. A number of strain gauges may be used to measure the stress distribution round a mast. The resistor may be used as a load cell to measure the weight of a vehicle on a bridge.
