Abstract
457,295. Compression resistances. YOUNG, R. C. K., 6, Stanley Street, Sydney, Australia. Nov. 9, 1935, No. 31082. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1934. [Class 37] [See also Groups XVIII and XXXVIII] In a weighing or other force-measuring apparatus, a tubular stress member 10, of glass or metal, contains a carbon pile resistance 12 adjustable between metal end pieces 14, 15, a tube 13 of insulating material being interposed between the stress member and the resistance. A weighing beam 18 with scale pan 21 or pressure member bears on the end piece 14. An electric supply through terminals 24 leads to the opposite ends of the carbon pile and includes a rheostat 26, voltmeter 25 and galvanometer 27. The tubular stress member may be in the form of a plurality of bars. An article placed in the scale pan compresses the stress member 10 and reduces the resistance of the carbon pile the weight being indicated by the galvanometer. The tubular stress member may be arranged to operate under tension instead of under compression.
