Apparatus for determining the internal stresses in a solid body comprises means for heating a local area for a short time and measuring the subsequential dimensional changes round this area which represent the sense and magnitude of the internal stresses, and can be evaluated by reference to a predetermined calibration chart. As shown Figs.1, 2, the heat source comprises a filament lamp 26 focused by tube 27 on an area 11 of the test body 45, and arranged to be switched on for ten seconds. The dimensional changes over the area 11 are measured 80 seconds later by four pairs of feelers 10a, 10b symmetrically located round the area 11. Each feeler point is forced against the surface of the test body by a cam 15 via a spring 13 and quartz tube 12 carrying the feeler 10a at one end and pressing against a spring member 30 at the other end. Strain gauge resistors d 1 , d 2 are mounted on spring 30. The initial stress in member 30 is adjusted by knob 34 and screw thread 32. Strain ganges d 1 , d 2 , d 3 and d 4 associated with feelers 10a, 10b are connected in a bridge circuit, which measures the displacement of feelers 10a, 10b subsequent to a heating period. By plotting the outputs of each of the four pairs of feelers, the magnitude and sign of the stress in the area 11 can be shown, e.g. on a polar diagram.
