Abstract

Triethanolamine borate is produced by reacting boric acid and triethanolamine, preferably under reflux and with agitation, at a temperature and for a period such that substantially all of the water produced in the reaction is removed, adding the resulting mass in molten form, preferably slowly and with agitation, to a solvent which dissolves any unreacted starting materials and any by-products formed during the reaction but which does not dissolve triethanolamine borate to a significant extent and separating solid triethanolamine borate from said solvent. Preferably the solvent has a boiling point below the melting point of triethanolamine borate. Suitable solvents include isopropanol, carbon tetrachloride, butanol and acetonitrile. The solvent is preferably at room temperature when addition of the molten mass is started. The solid product may be recovered from the liquid by filtration. Detailed examples are given.
