Abstract

The invention comprises a process for the production of terephthalic acid by the hydrolysis of a polyalkylene terephthalate by means of water, which is substantially free from acids and alkalis and is at a temperature above 200 DEG C. At the conclusion of the hydrolysis the reaction mixture is cooled and the terephthalic acid separated, preferably at about 80 DEG C., e.g. by filtration. Prior to separation the reactants may be allowed to stand at about boiling temperature for some time. Examples are given of the hydrolysis of (1) polyethylene terephthalate, (2) polytetramethylene terephthalate, each containing some titanium dioxide.
