Abstract

A process for preparing a blend of butyl rubber with a copolymer of at least 60% wt. of a C4 to C8 conjugated diolefin with up to 40 wt. per cent of a mono vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon, curable to a product of improved hardness, comprises cold-masticating the butyl rubber with said copolymer. The preferred co-polymers are those of butadiene and styrene. The butyl rubber is preferably cold-masticated with up to 10% by weight of a copolymer oil which has been prepared by polymerizing at least 60 wt. per cent preferably 75-90 wt. per cent of a C4 to C8 conjugated diolefin, preferably butadiene with up to 40 wt. per cent preferably 25-60 wt. per cent of the vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon, preferably styrene in the presence of a sodium catalyst.
