Abstract

1,222,325. Branched styrene-butadiene copolymer. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 18 June, 1969 [20 June, 1968], No. 30768/69. Heading C3P. Random copolymers of butadiene, styrene, and a branching agent are obtained by contacting styrene and butadiene in a weight ratio of more than 1 : 1 with an alkyl lithium catalyst and a branching agent which is an aromatic hydrocarbon substituted with at least two vinyl groups and an inert hydrocarbon solvent, adding butadiene incrementally or continuously so as to maintain the original weight ratio of styrene and butadiene, continuing the polymerization until at least 80% of the initial styrene has been incorporated in the living copolymer, and coupling the living copolymer with a di- or poly-functional organic coupling agent. In the example, styrene, butadiene and divinyl benzene are copolymerized in a cyclohexane-isopentane solvent mixture in the presence of sec.-butyl lithium and the resulting polymers coupled with 1,2-dibromoethane. Conventional vulcanizing recipes and the results of numerous tests on the products are given.
