Abstract

Multi-arm star copolymers have good physical properties due to copolymerized vinyl pyridine. The copolymers are prepared by subjecting to anionic polymerisation or copolymerisation in a solvent a 1,3- conjugated diene e.g. butadiene, alone or in admixture with a monoalkenyl aromatic monomer, e.g. styrene, using a monolithio organometallic initiator. The copolymerisation may be random or block copolymerisation. At least three moles of divinyl benzene per active polymeric anion are then added to form a nucleus to which at least four radial arms containing the diene units are linked, thus forming a multi- arm star polymer or copolymer. A vinyl pyridine or mixture of monomers one of which is a vinyl pyridine is thereafter added to provide the star copolymer with at least one additional arm containing units of polymerized or copolymerized vinyl pyridine which latter units constitute from 0.5 to 50% by weight of the resulting copolymer. The addition of a proton donor to the polymerization mixture decomposes the active chain ends and enables the resulting copolymer to be recovered in conventional manner.
