Abstract

Elastomeric block copolymers are made by polymerizing an alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a lithium metal or organolithium catalyst to form A-Li, in which A is a polymer block of alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon having an average molecular weight of 2,000 to 100,000, adding a conjugated diene and continuing polymerization to form an intermediate block copolymer A-B-Li, in which B is a diene polymer block having an average molecular weight of 5,000 to 500,000, adding a dihalohydrocarbon and coupling two of the intermediate copolymers to form a final block copolymer A-B-C-B-A in which C is the hydrocarbon residue of the dihalohydrocarbon. Dihalohydrocarbons specified are the dichloro, dibromo and chlorobromo derivatives of methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane and hexane, dibromodecane and alpha, alpha1-dichloro-p-xylene. Preferred alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbons and conjugated dienes are, respectively, styrene and isoprene.
