Abstract

1444680 Block copolymer preparation GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 29 April 1974 [17 May 1973] 18567/74 Heading C3P A block copolymer of the formula ABA where each A is polyalphamethylstyrene and B is a polymer of a conjugated diene is obtained by contacting a mixture of the monomers with an organodilithium catalyst at 20‹ to 45‹ C., there being an excess of the alphamethylstyrene monomer in the polymerization mixture. A small amount of styrene is desirably present to promote linking of the blocks. Examples prepare alphamethylstyrene-butadiene block copolymers in alpha-methylstyrene alone as solvent or additionally with benzene using dilithioisoprene, di(alphalithio - 3 - methylpentyl)benzene, or alpha(dilithiodiisoprenyl)-3- methylpentyltoluene.
