Abstract

1491741 Production of transparent block copolymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 10 Jan 1975 [10 Jan 1974 8 June 1974] 1190/75 Heading C3P Transparent block copolymers are obtained by the sequential polymerization in a hydrocarbon solvent and in the presence of an organolithium initiator of 65 to 90% of an alkenylaromatic monomer and 35 to 10% of a conjugated diene monomer to form (a) at least one non-elastomeric polymer block of the alkenylaromatic monomer(s) only, said block(s) comprising 50 to 90% of the total alkenylaromatic monomer employed and (b) at least one elastomeric block formed by feeding the two monomers continuously to the polymerization system in a weight ratio of from 0À1 : 1 to 3À0 : 1. The monomers used to form the copolymer block may be fed as a mixture or separately and may, in the latter case be fed consecutively. The method of feeding avoids accumulation of unreacted monomer and thus results in a substantially random copolymer block. The polymerization may be effected with a Lewis base, such as an ether or amine, present in at least the copolymerization stage(s). In examples styrene(S) - b - styrene - co - butadiene (B), S - b - S - co - B - b - S, S - b - S - co - B - b - Sco - B - b - S, and S - b - S - co - B - b - Sco - B - b - S - co - B - b - S copolymers are obtained.
