Abstract

1387594 Block copolymers GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 29 March 1972 [26 April 1971] 14731/72 Heading C3P Block copolymers having at least three blocks, including two terminal non-elastomeric blocks derived from mono-vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomers and a central elastomeric block derived from a conjugated diene, in which the central block comprises at least 80 % of 1,4-linkages, are prepared by sequential polymerization in a hydrocarbon solvent catalysed by an organomonolithium compound and an ether, the molar ratio of lithium to ether being 1 : 2 to 1 : 4. The aromatic monomer is first reacted with the catalyst and the resulting living polymer may then be reacted first with the diene and then with a further amount of the same or a different aromatic monomer, or the living polymer may be reacted with a mixture of the diene and the aromatic monomer. In the latter case the central block consists predominantly of diene units at the end which is formed first, but an increasing proportion of vinyl aromatic units is incorporated as the diene is exhausted, the third block being formed when all the diene has reacted. Examples describe the preparation of copolymers of styrene and butadiene or isoprene using a sec-butyllithium-diethyl ether (1 : 2) catalyst.
