Abstract

1415717 Transparent multi-block butadienestyrene copolymers FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 14 March 1973 [15 March 1972] 12323/73 Heading C3P Block copolymers of the BSBS type where each B represents a butadiene polymer block containing a small amount of styrene units and each S represents a polystyrene block, and containing 60 to 90% of styrene in the form of the blocks S, are obtained by a two-stage copolymerization, using a hydrocarbon solvent such as benzene or cyclohexane and an alkyl lithium initiator in a controlled amount, both monomers being present in each stage, the B/S molar ratios being 0À077 to 0À57 and 0À12 to 1À48 respectively. The copolymers have 70 to 4% elongations and Izod impact strengths of 4À0 to 0À3 ft. lbs. per inch of notch. The chain length of the B blocks is controlled by the lower amounts of monomer and by the amounts of initiator used to ensure that the product is transparent.
