A communication system of the kind in which intelligence is transmitted as a modulation of a light beam has two adjacent sections of pipe through which light passes during operation of the system and which are not aligned and which have optical devices at their adjacent ends, one of these devices serving to concentrate light passing through the associated section of pipe to form a small image, while the other device serves to direct light into its associated section of pipe generally in the direction of the length of the pipe so that there is little attenuation of light passing from one pipe section to another. In the embodiment shown pipes 1, 2 are pivoted together with a ball joint 11, the optical devices being lenses 3, 4. If the pipes-are inclined at an angle greater than about 2 degrees a prism is placed between them to bend the light beam. The light beam may be in the form of a laser.
