Abstract
1405034 Light guides AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 17 July 1973 [2 Aug 1972] 34091/73 Heading G2J The output numerical aperture (NA d ) see Fig. 9 (not shown) of a fibre optic device 50 comprising two fibre optic bundles 52, 60 is expanded to NA o by forming one of the faces 58 of one of bundles 52 at an angle to the axis of the bundle and connecting it intimately to a face 64 of the other bundle 60. Where, as shown, the device 50 comprises fibres which taper outwardly from a small input end 56 to a larger output end 58, the angle face 58 is formed on the tapered bundle 52. Where the unit is not tapered, see e.g. Figs. 1, 6 (not shown) the angled face (26, 40, 42) may be formed on either or both connecting faces, and the output NA o is then greater than the input NA i . The connecting interface 58, 64 may be cylindrical, spherical or aspherical.
