Abstract

The present invention relates to optical couplers for fiber optics. Prior art couplers have not been capable of selectively making unidirectional, bidirectional or multidirectional couplings, with minimum pulse distortion in a manner limiting loss of light. Additionally, an optical coupler has been needed to make it possible to easily vary the ratio of tapped or added light to transmitted light. The present invention overcomes these deficiencies by providing an optical coupler including fiber optic cable terminating means 18, 22 associated with first and second fiber optic cables and arranged for establishing a first light transmission path between the ends of the first and second fiber optic cables. First 28 and second lenses are provided in the first light transmission path for shaping the light leaving the end of the first fiber optic cable and entering the end of the second fiber optic cable, respectively. A third lens is provided in a second light transmission path for shaping a diverted portion of the light from the first light transmission path entering the end of the third fiber optic cable. The terminating means 38 associated with the third fiber optic cable is arranged relative to a light diverter 40 so that the second light transmission path extends between the light diverter 40 and the end of the third fiber optic cable. The optical coupler can also include optional apparatus for diverting a portion of the light in the second light transmission path, e.g. between third and fourth fibre optic cables, into the first light transmission path. In this case fourth fibre optic cable terminating means 102 is used. <IMAGE>
