Abstract
A coupler, for extracting and detecting a portion of light propagating along an optical fibre connection in the direction of arrows (8), comprises an upstream portion of fibre (9) has a core (10) of larger diameter than the core (4) of a downstream portion of fibre (2), both portions having cladding of lower refractive index than their respective cores, and a light detector (18) preferably linked by an index matcher (22) which surrounds a length of the downstream portion. A portion of the light propagating in the core (10) of the upstream fibre is diverted by the step change in core diameters into the cladding (6) of the downstream fibre. This arrangement can be used either as a simple tap to extract light from an intermediate point along an optical fibre or it can be used as part of a duplex arrangement at one end of a fibre. <IMAGE>
