A yarn winder for causing a yarn collecting mandrel 19a to oscillate along its axis comprises a first motor 13 driving a cam 31 that traverses a carriage 16 along guide rails 17, and a motor 18 and mandrel 19a mounted on the carriage 16, the motor 18 driving the mandrel 19a. A stationary motor 22 drives a shaft 24, the free end of which carries a pair of spiral cam members that engage the yarn to be wound and cause it to undergo a transverse fluttering action.
