972,578. Harvesting machines. MASSEY-FERGUSON (AUSTRALIA) Ltd. Feb. 9, 1961 [March 31, 1960], No. 11318/60. Heading A1F. A sugar cane harvester having a lowlevel cutter in a passageway formed by sidewalls 6 and having a conveyer which moves the cut canes to another cut- ter which chops the canes into short killets which are discharged by a rear elevator 8 is characterized by a tapping mechanism carried by a pivotally mounted arm 10 and including an upper and a lower gathering component 31, 32 which converge towards a horizontally disposed rotary cutter 24. Each component 31, 32 has a conveyer with projections 39 to engage the leafy cane tops and guide them towards the cutter and also has adjustable feelers 47. A rotatable deflector consisting of four flexible rods 55 and a deflector plate 43 discharge the tops from the mechanism. Specification 937,065 is referred to.
