Abstract
<PICT:0972154/C6-C7/1> Sodium, produced electrolytically from fused NaCl with added CaCl2, is collected through a riser pipe 9 provided with a rotatable and vertically movable scraper 15, each blade of the scraper having at least one vertical sharp cutting edge closely adjacent the inner wall of the riser pipe with the edge extending over the whole length through which there is a significant temperature change in the rising sodium. Na and Ca are generated at the cathode and rise through the pipe 9, the Ca as it cools being precipitated on the wall of the riser pipe from whence it is removed by the scraper 15 to prevent plugging and returned to the bath where it re-forms CaCl2. The scraper shown in Fig. 3 has three blades, one or two of which may have openings 17, Fig. 2. The scraper can be operated at periodic intervals either manually or automatically and can be first rotated to scrape the inside of the pipe then raised a few inches and dropped to loosen any material that may have attached itself to the blades. The cell has a cylindrical graphite anode 3, an annular steel cathode 4, a porous metal diaphragm 6, an inverted trough 7 for collecting Na and a chlorine dome 10.
