Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently electrodeposit mercury from a mercury-contg. aq. soln. on a cathode and separate it by electrolyzing the soln. with an electrode packed with carbonaceous particles as the cathode.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is finely pulverized, granulated to about 3W4 mm in diameter, carbonized at above 800°C, and packed into a container made of glass, etc. to form a cathode. Using the cathode and a graphite anode, mercury-contg. industrial waste water is electrolyzed. Thus, the mercury is electrodeposited on the carbide cathode and separated. Since the cathode has a large surface area, the mercury in the waste water can be electrodeposited with superior efficiency without vibrating or stirring the cathode, and it can be recovered efficiently.
