Abstract

2-Methyl -5- trifluoromethyl-benzselenazole is prepared by heating 4-chloro -3- nitro-trifluoromethyl-benzene with powdered selenium in the presence of aluminium and NaOH to give the diselenide, reducing this with zinc and acetic acid to give a zinc selenide which is then acetylated with acetic anhydride and cyclized by means of caustic soda.ALSO:Pseudocyanine dyes of the general formula <FORM:0972001/C4-C5/1> wherein Y is a sulphur or selenium atom, R and R1 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, Z completes a pyridine, quinoline or benzoquinoline nucleus and X is an anion are prepared by known methods from 2-methyl-5-trifluoromethyl-benzthiazole or the corresponding benzselenazole.
