Abstract

1,3,4-Oxadiazol-2-ones of the formula <FORM:1085771/C2/1> where X is H, Na or K and R1 is alkyl, optionally substituted aryl, aralkyl optionally substituted on the aryl nucleus, optionally substituted heterocyclyl attached by a caron atom, or heterocyclylalkyl optionally substituted on the heterocyclyl nucleus, the substituted nuclei carrying one or more chlorine atoms and/or alkyl groups containing not more than four carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting sodium or potassium hypobromite at between - 10 DEG and + 10 DEG C. in the presence of sodium or potassium hydroxide with an acylurea of the formula R1-CO-NH-CO-NH2 and optionally treating the salt obtained with an acid to yield the base. The products may be reacted with perchloromethylmercaptan to yield compounds of the formula <FORM:1085771/C2/2>
