Abstract

971,537. Releasable fastenings. AERPAT A.G. Dec. 9, 1960 [Dec. 11, 1959], No. 42495/60. Headings E2A and E2B. A fastening for securing two plates 14, 15 together comprises a body portion 16 (see Fig. 2) for insertion into registering holes in the plates, said body portion being formed with a passageway 18 and chamber 26 for receiving respectively a pin 17 and piston 34. The body 16 further comprises holes 23 housing balls 22, and is encircled over part of its length by a spring 37 located at one end in a fixed groove 38, and at the other in a groove 42 formed in a member 41 which is slidable relative to the body portion 16. Thus when the pin 17 is in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, the plates 14, 15 are clamped together between the spring-urged members 41 and the balls 22, the latter being held at the outer extremities of holes 23 by means of the portion 32 of the pin 17. A spring 36 normally maintains the portion 32 in register with the holes 23. In order to release the fastening, either fluid under pressure is introduced via the duct 43 into the chamber 26, or the plunger 44 is depressed manually, to move the pin to bring the recessed portion 33 in register with the balls 22, whereupon the balls recede into the body portion 16 and, under the action of the spring 37, the fastening is ejected from the aperture in the plates. When the plates to be joined are large a plurality of such fasteners, 10, 11, 12 and 13, may be used (see Fig. 1), the ducts 43 of the fasteners being interconnected by a conduit 50 in communication via a valve 51 with a source of pressurized fluid.
