[Also in Division G3] Rotation of a shaft 18 by an externally applied force is controlled by an escapement in which an escapement wheel 19 fixed to the shaft 18 is allowed to rotate through one tooth pitch each time a coil 1 wound on a hollow magnetic core 2 is energized and de-energized by an applied electrical impulse. The coil 1 has magnetic pole-pieces 3, 4 extending radially at its ends, the polepiece 4 forming part of a side plate 6 which, with a side plate 7, supports the escapement. An armature 5, comprising soft iron parts 5a, 5c, and a copper part 5b, is carried by a plate member 10 fixed to a rocking shaft 11 and having a counterbalance weight 13 at its other end. An escapement arm 12 also fixed on the shaft 11 has pins 21, 22 engageable by the teeth of the escapement wheel 19. When the coil 1 is energized, the armature 5 is moved against a spring 14 from a position resting against a stop 16 to a position contacting the polepieces 3, 4, thus rocking the escapement arm 12 and allowing the escapement wheel 19 to rotate half a tooth-pitch. When the coil is deenergized the armature returns to the stop 16 and the escapement wheel rotates a further half of a tooth-pitch. The escapement may be used in a coin-freed meter.
