Abstract

Penicillins of the formula <FORM:0971169/C1/1> in which R1 and R11 each represent a hydrogen atom or a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic radical containing 1 to 11 carbon atoms or a cycloaliphatic radical, which aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical may be substituted by one or more members selected from halogen atoms and hydroxyl-, alkyl- and cyano-groups, or represent an aromatic or heterocyclic radical which may contain as substituents one or more members selected from halogen atoms and alkyl (containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms)-, hydroxyl-, alkoxy-, alkylmercapto-, acetylamino-, propionyl-amino, alkylamino (in which the alkyl group contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms)-, carboxyalkyl- and nitro-groups or represents an araliphatic radical which may be substituted by one or more members selected from chlorine and bromine atoms and nitro-groups, may be prepared by reacting a 6-ureido-penicillanic acid corresponding to the general formula <FORM:0971169/C1/2> in buffered solution with a chloride, bromide, anhydride or mixed anhydride of a carboxylic acid, the compound formed being isolated as an acid or converted to a physiologically tolerable salt. Examples describe the preparation of a number of such penicillins including N1-a -phenoxy-propionyl-N1-benzyl-, N1-a -phenoxy-propionyl-N1-undecyl-, N1-n-butyl-N1-phenacetyl-, N1-benzyl-N1-a -furoyl- and N1-cyclohexyl-N1-a -phenoxy-propionyl-6-ureido -penicillanic acids. Pharmaceutical preparations comprise one of the above penicillins in association with a pharmaceutical carrier in forms such as jellies, powders, ointments, pastes, tinctures, solutions or suspensions.
