1294562 Fused benzimidazoles SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 13 Nov 1970 [20 Jan 1970] 2637/70 Heading C2C Compounds of formula in which Q is a hydrogen atom, a cyano group or an acyl group derived from a carboxylic acid or a carbonic acid mono-ester, two adjacent groups X, together with the carbon atoms of the benzene ring to which they are attached, form a thiadiazole, oxadiazole or imidazole ring optionally substituted by one or more haloalkyl groups or acyl groups specified above, the other groups X are hydrogen or alkyl, and R is alkyl or haloalkyl are prepared by (a) when Q is hydrogen, cyclization by reaction of an orthodiamine with an acid RCOOH or by heating an ortho-di-NHCOR-substituted compound in the presence of an acid or a base, or (b) when Q is cyano or acyl, reaction of an alkali metal salt of a product of (a) above with a compound Q-Hal. The products are insecticides and herbicides.
