In a system for introducing air into the air space of an air pressure vessel 2 the system comprises a receptacle 4 adapted to be connected alternately to the vessel 2 or atmosphere, the bottom part of the receptacle 4 being connected to the vessel 2 by a pipe 5 which opens into the vessel 2 of the desired water levels therein, the top part of the receptacle 4 being connected by a pipe 6 to the vessel 2 at a level which is not below that at which the pipe 5 opens into the vessel 2. The system operates as follows: With the valve 7 in the position shown in Fig. 1 any water above the pipe 5 discharges into the receptacle 4 and, by its static air pressure, the water opens a non-return valve 10 so that air present in the receptacle 4 is displaced into the vessel 2. After the receptacle 4 has filled with water the valve 7 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 to connect the receptacle 4 to atmosphere and empty the water therefrom and at the same time suck air through a pipe 11 and non- return valve 12 into the receptacle 4. The valve 7 is now returned to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the cycle repeated.
