Abstract

969,731. Friction clutches. BLACKSTONE CORPORATION. March 19, 1963 [Oct. 11, 1962], No. 10756/63. Headings F2C and F2L. [Also in Division D1] A member 38 has a rest position on a fixed part 26 and is rotated by a vertical shaft 16 having a lifting member 63 which lifts a clutch plate 53 into engagement with the member 38 when the shaft is rotated in a given direction. Rigidly attached to the member 38 is a plate 46 lined with a friction material 49 and also an annular support 51 lined with friction material 68 which engages the fixed support 26. In the rotating position of the member 38 it is lifted clear of the support 26 by the clutch plate 53 bearing upward on lining 49. Clutch plate 53 has a spiral groove 62 on the inside of its bore, and the lifting member 63 within this bore also has a spiral groove. Balls are arranged in these grooves so that when the lifting member is rotated in one direction by shaft 16 to which it is splined, the clutch plate 53 rises.
