Newspapers in an overlapping stream having gaps between batches of predetermined number are passed by coiled wire conveyers 16, 11, Fig. 1, on to two prongs 38, Figs. 1 and 2, to form a stack between the end of the conveyer 11 and stops 33, the shape of the prongs 38 compensating for the greater thickness of the folded side of the papers. Rollers 24, 27 having grooves supported on wires of an upper conveyer 18, press on the papers to remove air from the folds. A feeler 45 detects the gaps in the stream and controls an hydraulic cylinder 44, which causes a cross-bar 43 to move ejector rods 42 forwards and move the pile off the prongs 38 on to a further conveyer 39. The return movement of the ejector is initiated when the feeler 45 is depressed by the following sheets and when a further control is actuated by the ejector reaching its right-hand position. As the ejector returns, the papers of the next stack rest on horizontal portions 47 of the rods 47, being swept off to fall on to the prongs 38 as the ejector completes its return movement. As the papers fall into the stack, they are jogged by two vertical spring arms 48, Figs. 2 and 3, vibrated by pins 50 on two of the conveyer pulleys 14.
