Printed sheets from a plurality of stacks are fed into folding apparatus and folded to form double, triple or multiple sheets; if the folding is parallel, the folded sheets are cut into separate sheet units; the folded sheets or units from each folding apparatus, which may be a buckling folder, are fed along divergent paths or along paths of different lengths or at different speeds to a transversely moving conveyer so that the sheets or units are collated in piles. The sheets may be flat on a conveyer belt or in inverted V-form on a conveyer saddle. In another form, Fig. 7, the sheets rest on a stationary table 75 against a stop rail 78 and are collated by pins 77 on a moving belt 74, being fed to the tables by pairs of belts 99 moving at different speeds. In another form, Fig. 8, the table comprises inclined receiving surfaces 130 from which they are collected by pins 77. The folding mechanisms are controlled by sensing devices actuated by the sheets on the conveyer. Unfolding signatures.-If the sheets 141, Fig. 11, are to rest on a conveyer saddle, they are opened and deposited on the saddle alternately by two pairs of suction cups 142, 143, Figs. 10, and 11, oscillating in opposite directions under the control of an air piston in a cylinder 149. An over-centre mechanism 150 responsive to the oscillation of the cup carrier actuates a reversing valve 156 to reverse the movement of the piston.
