Abstract

1275633 Stitching apparatus HARRIS-INTERTYPE CORP 3 June 1969 [18 June 1968] 28111/69 Heading B4C [Also in Division B8] General.-Sheets are separated from a number of piles 34 (only one shown) by suction devices 70 and collated to form stacks on a surface 36 along which the stacks are moved by pusher members 38. Each completed stack is transferred by a reciprocatable shuttle assembly 46 to a stitching station 48. The stacks are registered against stops 134, stitched by members 94 and 96 and forwarded to a folding and cutting assembly. Feeding sheets; pusher feeds, reciprocating grippers, registering.-Suction devices 70, provided above each stack, are simultaneously moved on a bar 80. Pusher members 38 carried on endless chain 84 are lowered beneath the surface 36 as the stacks are moved away by the reciprocatable shuttle 46. The shuttle, provided with upper and lower clamping bars takes-over each successive stack from pusher members 38, accelerates a gripped stack to a position beyond collapsible stop member 134 and then returns to register the stack by its originally trailing edge against the stop, whereupon the shuttle releases the stack and returns to grip the next succeeding stack. A pressure roller 140 holds each stack in the register position. The relationship between pusher members 38 and the shuttle 46 is adjustable so that a stack may be registered with its centre line or with its originally trailing edge beneath stitcher members 94 and 96. Stop 134 is also adjustable for this purpose. Folding and stitching apparatus.-Stitcher heads 94 and 96 supplied with wire from reels 160 are adjustable along bar 156 and movable on bars 152, 154 into engagement with the stacks. One of the heads may be rendered inoperative to permit corner stitching. Following the stitcher assembly is a buckle folding unit 60 having a folding pocket 300 which may be blocked-off by a guide 320 to prevent an edge stitched stack being folded. The folded stacks are trimmed by a blade 62. Unfolded stacks are passed directly to conveyer 324. The folder is operated at a speed greater than the shuttle assembly 46 to move a stack from beneath the stitcher heads before the shuttle brings the next stack into position.
